FASS, STEVEN, AND RICHARD S. RIVLIN. Regulation of riboflavinmetabolizing enzymes in ribuj?auin de_ficiency. Am, J. Physiol. 217(4) : 988-99 1. 1969.-The effects of riboflavin deficiency in rats on the hepatic activities of flavokinase, FAD pyrophosphorylase, and FMN phosphatase, three enzymes involved in riboflavin metabolism, have been measured and compared to the hepatic concentrations of FAD, FMN, riboflavin, and protein. Of the enzymes involved in FMN and FAD biosynthesis, the activity of the first, flavokinase, is depressed in deficient animals to 6070 of normal, whereas the activity of the second, FAD pyrophosphorylase, is elevated to 15070 of normal. The FMN-degrading enzyme, FMN phosphatase, is unaffected by riboflavin deficiency. Refeeding of riboflavin to deficient animals restores the activities of both Aavokinase and FAD pyrophosphorylase to normal. The data demonstrate that riboflavin deficiency has selective effects upon the activities of liver enzymes involved in riboflavin metabolism. It is suggested that these effects may conshtute a possible adaptive mechanism for conserving FAD in riboflavin deficiency.

Update on riboflavin and multiple sclerosis: a systematic review
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Riboflavin plays an important role in myelin formation, and its deficiency is implicated as a risk factor for multiple sclerosis. Here, we systematically reviewed the literature concerning the health benefits of riboflavin on MS. The literature recorded within four main databases, including rel...
متن کاملEffects of riboflavin deficiency and realimentation on flavin enzymes of tissues.
This study was undertaken to determine how flavin enzymes are distributed in different tissues and their fate with riboflavin restriction of greater or lesser severity. Such a study might be expected to uncover differences in metabolic patterns of different tissues and to expose enzymatic defects which must underlie the functional deficits and physical changes of riboflavin deficiency. Tissues ...

1. Riboflavin deficiency at two levels of severity was produced in weanling rats by feeding deficient diets for 6 weeks and using neck collars to prevent coprophagy. The severity of deficiency was monitored by growth, liver flavin levels and the activation coefficient of erythrocyte glutathione oxidoreductase (NAD(P)H) (EC 1 . 6 .4 .2 ) . Control groups, receiving the same diet with ample added...
متن کاملشیوع کمبود ریبوفلاوین در دانشآموزان روستاهای کرمان و رابطه آن با میزان ریبوفلاوین، پروتئین و انرژی دریافتی
Background: The incidence of riboflavin deficiency is high in women and children in developing countries and the deficiency almost invariably occurs in combination with deficiencies of other water soluble vitamins. The objective of this study was the assessment of riboflavin status of rural school children in Kerman province and its relationship with riboflavin, protein and energy intake. Meth...
